Overview Jeremiah 39:1-18 - "Wages Paid Slowly, Certainly, Completely". Reading through our chapter this week is not for the faint of heart. But for those who do, we'll get to explore the accuracy a true prophet of Yahweh the Living God demonstrates. For any that pay attention, it is truly breathtaking. |

Jeremiah 39:1-3 - "Eat. Sleep.Yahweh Says, 'Invasion Coming From The North'. Repeat.". The capture of Jerusalem that we read about in today's verses did not happen overnight. Try eighteen months. And to Zedekiah an added layer of horror, because Jeremiah had already been saying it was coming. And not just once. Or twice. At least TWENTY-FOUR times that are recorded the prophet tells of this invasion. See also Jeremiah 1:13-15, Jeremiah 4:6-7, Jeremiah 4:16, Jeremiah 5:15-17, Jeremiah 6:1, Jeremiah 6:22-23, Jeremiah 8:16, Jeremiah 10:22, Jeremiah 13:20, Jeremiah 15:12, Jeremiah 20:4, Jeremiah 21:4, Jeremiah 25:8-9, Jeremiah 27:6, Jeremiah 28:14, Jeremiah 32:2-3, Jeremiah 32:24, Jeremiah 32:28, Jeremiah 34:2, Jeremiah 34:22, Jeremiah 36:29, Jeremiah 37:8, Jeremiah 38:3, and Jeremiah 38:18.
Similarly, our God tells us of avoidable unpleasantries yet to come. Let's listen and heed. |

******* CAUTION: MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY. *******
Jeremiah 39:4-7 - "You Shoulda Taken Option A.". Let's remember as we read today's portion that every life that was lost as Zedekiah and his men are forcibly taken by the Babylonians is a life that could have been spared if only this wicked, stubborn and somewhat naive king of Judah would only have listened to Yahweh speaking through Jeremiah and surrendered years earlier. The life of Zedekiah is a cautionary tale to any of us who are so abundantly blessed and gifted in this life and yet want to ignore the God who is blessing us and gifting us so as to bless others and bring Him glory. May it be that we see while we yet have eyes. |

Jeremiah 39:8-10 - "A City Burns". While reading today's verses, remember that what we read yesterday as well as today was avoidable if only the king would have done what the prophet was telling him. (Review Jeremiah 38:17-18). For our life application, it behooves us to understand that we all are in Zedekiah's position to the extent that we will surrender sooner or later, if not to Yahweh and His benevolence, then to someone or something that is less than. Less than Yahweh. Less than benevolent. |
Day 5 | | (Originally posted Thursday, September 25, 2014)
Jeremiah 39:11-14 - "A Relief In The Negative Space". There is a bittersweetness, a paradox and a sense of irony (even though "I walk-ey") as we read today's portion. In the midst of the overthrow of everything God's people knew, Jeremiah, who had been spurned at every turn, and oppressed and threatened for doing what Yahweh told him to do, now is protected, shown favor, and better treatment than his own people showed him. We see again how faithful Yahweh is at these moments. See Jeremiah 1:8 and 1:19. |
Day 6 | | (Originally posted Friday, September 26, 2014)
Jeremiah 39:14-18 - "Not Forgotten". In closing out the chapter, we revisit Ebed-melech, who helped Jeremiah and saved his life when he was trapped in the cistern. As a reward for his aid, he would be saved from the horrors happening there in Jerusalem as a result of the king's foolish prideful stubbornness. This passage acts as an underscore to what we read yesterday. The message the two passages underscore is this: "Those who will not forget Yahweh will not be forgotten." (See also Psalm 1:6, Matthew 10:32-33). |
