Week 36 |
Day 1 | | (Originally posted Sunday, August 31, 2014)
Overview Jeremiah 36:1-32 - "The Book That Is Burned That Burns Back Worse". As we read through our chapter this week, let's keep in mind that our God Yahweh takes a very high view of Scripture, which is His Word. He doesn't speak frivolously or just to hear Himself speak. His Word never returns to Him without accomplishing His will.
Everyone who may try to stop His Word ultimately find He has through that Word stopped them. |

Jeremiah 36:1-3, 4-8. "Texting In The Ancient Near East". Let's know as we read today's portions that calendars are kept historically by the reigns of kings. We see in today's portion we are in year 4 of Jehoiakim's reign in Judah. (Jesus is the Lord, the King of Kings, which is why we are in 2014A.D., which is Anno Domini, Latin for "the year of The Lord". He reigns, you see.) And notice that Yahweh tells Jeremiah to write so that people can be saved, and Jeremiah has Baruch do the actual writing as he dictates. This may be foreign to us now in this tech age where all sorts of e-recording and e-reading is going on, but we may want to revisit how the old timers did this without electricity, you know, just in case we find ourselves without electricity. We also discover that Jeremiah has been restricted from going himself to God's house to deliver Yahweh's message, so it's better for Baruch to write the words because he would be reading them, which would be most of the chapters we've been reading ourselves in this project year.
Consider writing down in your own handwriting God's word. Eye to hand to mind to voice to ear back into mind make it very difficult for it not to make it's way into heart. Then you'll know it by heart. You'll know Him by heart. Do the write thing. |
Day 3 | | (Originally posted Tuesday, September 2, 2014)
Jeremiah 36:9-10 - "A Baruch Becomes A Rapid". As we read today, let's notice about a year has passed from what we read in yesterday's portion. Imagine spending a year with a text you had written with your own hand, knowing you will be reading it to a crowd that will probably be antagonistic. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Baruch is not Jeremiah, but he is reading Jeremiah's word in his place. A fast was called because Babylon had invaded a nearby territory, and at that time Judah was allied with Egypt, which left themselves prone to a Babylonian invasion as well. A time of fasting is a time of spiritual hypersensitivity to receive guidance and answers from God. And Yahweh has perfectly positioned Jeremiah through Baruch and the written scroll in the perfectly positioned chamber in the heavily congested New Gate. All the people could hear. And hearing is an opportunity to listen. |

Jeremiah 36:11-19 - "You See What's About To Happen, Don't You? It's About To Go Down". In reading today, let's notice Baruch reading out in the open the book of Jeremiah which Jeremiah dictated to him, then reading to the private audience of essentially the king's cabinet members. Their motivations may be uncertain, but at least their actions are decisive: the king MUST hear the words Yahweh has given Jeremiah, and these his ministers will bring them to him. Meanwhile, Baruch and Jeremiah will be hidden away somewhere to avoid the almost certain execution order that the king will issue (he did it before with a prophet named Uriah; see Jeremiah 26:20-23) once he hears the words of Yahweh through Jeremiah through the book through his own ministers.
Run. |
Day 5 | | (Originally posted Thursday, September 4, 2014)
Jeremiah 36:20-26 - "Burning Yahweh's Word, Fueling Yahweh's Fire". As we read today's portion, let's be aware of our own position with respect to God's word. Are we like the wicked king, looking down on God's word? Do we burn away all the bits we don't like as if it were kindling? Are we like his servants, unphased by the disturbing words God has for all the king's men? Do we just change the subject the way we change the channels? Or perhaps we are like his ministers, gravely trying to get our king to recognize. Do we think there is a way to reason with the unreasonable?
Maybe, just maybe, we are like Jeremiah and Baruch, faithful to God and hidden by Him. His Word is our wall. And if burned, our firewall. |
Day 6 |
| (Originally posted Friday, September 5, 2014)
Jeremiah 36:27-32 - "Again". As we complete our chapter this week, let's begin to prepare, if we're not already prepared, to reproduce God's Word from memory. This practice may seem trivial and pointless to many, yet it will contribute to snatching many souls out of the fire of hell, God willing.
And He is. |
Day 7 | | (Originally posted Saturday, September 6, 2014)
Review Jeremiah 36:1-32 and REST in the certainty thatThough officials may lock out God's people, they cannot lock out His mind, And though authorities may lock up Yahweh's servants, His word will never be confined. |
