Week 5
Day 1
(Originally posted Sunday, January 26, 2014)

Overview Jeremiah 5:1-31 - "Time To Put The Meddle To The Peddle". This week as we read through Jeremiah 5, let us be mindful of the privilege we are given to see from Yahweh's perspective and the challenge with which we are presented to see ourselves as He sees us, and our deeds as He sees them. Pray up and stay up.
Day 2
(Originally posted Monday, January 27, 2014)

Jeremiah 5:1-3, 4-6 - "Oh, I've done that." Our readings today have Yahweh sending Jeremiah all over Jerusalem to find one righteous person, and if he can, they will be spared the coming invasion. Some of the responses he got are very similar to what we get these days after we've shared the gospel of Christ with people. We'll go through Romans3:23, 6:23, 5:8, and 10:9-10, 13, and then they'll say, "Oh, I've done that," even if their life tells a different story. Even if you think you can pull a fast one on Yahweh God, leopards are faster.
Day 3
(Originally posted Tuesday, January 28, 2014)

Jeremiah 5:7-9, 10-13 - "Full Disclosure". Once again, today's readings can be difficult for those of us in the church in the west, because over the years we've been maximizing God's appearance as a grandfatherly sort of sage who never gets upset, a kind of Santa Claus, who at worst will withhold gifts. We in leadership have failed to keep the balanced picture in frame: Yahweh God DOES get angry, and if anyone's anger is justified, it's His. A possible veiled wordplay in verse 8 that can be searingly clear in English suggests its meaning transcends directly to an English-speaking world. By neglecting to guide our congregations through these difficult passages, we're setting up many, many unknowing followers of Jesus to be blindsided on every side when these verses finally meet their eyes. Because of this neglect of the Scriptures, many end up echoing the sentiments of the people in verses 12 through 13.

Fire in the hole.
Day 4
(Originally posted Wednesday, January 29, 2014)

Jeremiah 5:14-17, 18, 19 - "Fire-Breathing Prophet". In our readings today, Yahweh through Jeremiah speaks smoldering words to His people. Their world as they have known it will be coming to an end. They wouldn't hear His words before and turn back to Him; He is graciously going to allow them to continue on their path away from Him. The same holds true today. Please hear Him calling you back to Him today.
Day 5
(Originally posted Thursday, January 30, 2014)

Jeremiah 5:20-29 - "And all the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made" or "How to ENRAGE the God of the universe". Today's reading gives us the sense that Yahweh God is saying in today's terms "REALLY?!" to His own people who are totally deforming the Imago Dei with which they have been imparted. Sadly, we all are doing this today in our sin nature. With each bit of wrong we produce or consume and process, we misuse and abuse the blessing that is the life He has given each of us. That's why it's not His fault when we face the consequences for our wrongs. If we were cars, gas would go in our tanks, and water in our radiators; if we thought we could just say we'll also work if we switch the gas and water because we really want to doesn't mean the car won't stop working just the same. His rules aren't like our rules; you can defy gravity, but you can't break it. His rules aren't like our rules; you don't break them--they break you.

Day 7
(Originally posted Saturday, February 1, 2014)

Review Jeremiah 5:1-31 and REST in the understanding that Yahweh God sees sin as a sickness that is ravaging us, but as the Great Physician, He has the cure.
