Week 21
Day 1

(Originally posted Sunday, May 18, 2014)

Overview Jeremiah 21:1-14 - "Mass Hysteria!". Let's breathe a deep breath and brace ourselves for the worst news as we read through this week's chapter. Maybe we can recall the value of the cautionary tale.
Day 2
(Originally posted Monday, May 19, 2014)

Jeremiah 21:1-2 - "...And Captain Crunch Is Waving Farewell...". As we read today's verses, as a sidenote we are reading of a different man named Pashhur. As a main note we should realize the king is testifying to Jeremiah's reliability as a prophet of Yahweh by sending his top holy rollers to see him! Also note that what is said amounts to, "Not saying we're wrong or you're right or anything, but could Yahweh save us anyway?"
"A siege can turn a prophet or quiet thinker into a hero."

Day 3

Jeremiah 21:3-7 - "I'm Afraid I've Got Some Bad News...". Well, today's reading is the answer Yahweh has for Jeremiah His messenger to give to Zedekiah's messengers. And it's ALL BAD for the leadership of Judah especially and for the people. Their chickens, so to speak, are now coming home to roost. There will be nowhere to hide for them. Time to assume crash positions.
Day 4
(Originally posted Wednesday, May 21, 2014)

Jeremiah 21:8-10 - "Let This Be A Lesson To Us" or "They Forgot Devarim". Let us remember as we read today's verses that even the WAY Yahweh says things speaks volumes, because while we are reading the what, the description of the end of their world as they know it, God begins with the why by saying, 'I set before you the way of life and the way of death.' This is the why because He is recalling to them His PRE-scription, His beforehand-writing, His own word He already gave them through Moses HUNDREDS OF YEARS EARLIER in the book called Devarim, we know as Deuteronomy. This phrase that begins, "I set before you..." occurs in 30:15 and 30:19. And you know what that means, right? It means that Yahweh is spotlighting WHAT'S IN BETWEEN, 30:16-18. Read that, then take a moment to get yourself back together.
Now, all these people have passed on, so what is the relevance for us, here, today. Here it is: Yahweh our God is faithful to His word EVEN IF we are not. It's all part of His plan.

So, if you're waiting for a word from Him, it's already waiting for you--in His word. Go get it.

Day 5
(Originally posted Thursday, May 22, 2014)

Jeremiah 21:11-12 - "What Will It Take For You To Do The Right Thing?". As we read our verses today, let's realize afresh that God likes justice. A lot. As His chosen people, He would much prefer they choose to live justly as well; to do otherwise , in fact, is behavior met with scorching consequences.
For those who choose to escape and save their lives, it took Babylon for them to realize that Yahweh really means what He says.
He's actually blessing us with such fiery demonstrations, because these are only previews of what's to come for those who choose to live in rebellion to His word, which is unjust living.
So what will it take for us to realize Yahweh's the real deal, and we need to do the right thing consistently?

Day 6
(Originally posted Friday, May 23, 2014)

Jeremiah 21:13-14 - "Justice As Just Does" or "En Passant". Once upon a time a five-year-old in the faith baptist boy sat across a chessboard from a young man steeped in the cult of Oneness Pentacostalism. A sign from heaven was given as the overconfident cultist blocked in his king and was mated by a single knight properly placed in only six or seven moves. There was not another game.
That game that day was like our text today, because in chess, two major considerations are material and position--what you have and where you have it.
In verse 13, Yahweh informs as to the futility of their position, though it's usually a good one, being surrounded on three sides by valleys.
In verse 14, God demonstrates there is poetry even in His punishment. All that the people would be losing was all they had built in their lives lived apart from Yahweh.
So it is with the Christian. We'll only lose ultimately everything we gained without Him.

Review Jeremiah 21:1-14 and REST as we come to Jesus:
"O City Of Peace, O city of pain,
How I've longed to gather you under wing;
See how your house is emptied by your refrain,
See how you'll see Me not until time to sing."
