My testimony to the power of prayer is also a testimony to the graciousness and patience of God, and a testimony to the fact that God still performs miracles in these last days.
It is no coincidence that my mother's initials were "TCB" because when there was something that needed to be done, she would "Take Care of Business"! She was a very strong woman. She believed that with enough effort, anything was possible. When people would tell her, "You can't," her reply was always, "Watch me." She was convinced for most of her life that the way into heaven was to do more good than bad. Her favorite saying was, "God helps those who help themselves."
My mother was not saved for most of her life,
But people were praying for her soul;She was a decent person, though she was not saved;
And people were praying for her soul;My mother spent most of her life ducking and avoiding
the Gospel of Jesus Christ;
She would simply change the subject;
But people were praying for her soul;And God brought death to her door,
And people were praying for her soul;The doctors said she had cancer, and they estimated that
she had two years to live;
And people were praying for her soul;My mother, the fighter, determined that she would beat this cancer;
And people were praying for her soul;After getting treatments and therapies, the cancer was beaten into remission;
And people were praying for her soul;Through the pain and suffering of the cancer and the chemotherapy
she recognized God,
She would cry out in her pain,
"Dios! Ayuda meh! AYUDA MEH!";
And people were praying for her soul;The doctors said she was terminal, and they estimated that she had
two weeks to live;
And people were praying for her soul;She finally recognized, she finally realized she wasn't strong enough. She finally admitted that she wasn't good enough. She finally didn't change the subject when a dear sister from the church came to her deathbed and shared the Gospel that we had tried to share so many times before. This time she finally listened. My mother prayed to receive Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord in January of 1997, just a few days before she died. She did it on borrowed time. Her testimony to my earthly sister was simple. She just said, "I got born again." I will see my mother again in heaven because God is God, and because my mother said, "Yes, Lord," and because people were praying for her soul.
They said two years, but she lived six. They said two weeks, but she lived three and a half. I serve a mighty God who is merciful and gracious and longsuffering. His love is great, His patience is vast, and His forgiveness is complete. He hears the prayers of His children.
The prayer of the righteous accomplishes much, and faith is accounted to us as righteousness, so when we pray, let us pray often and let us pray in faith, trusting that God is faithful, and that He will perform what He has promised. Let us take care of our Father's business, and may His name be praised forever. Amen.
