para - beside; ballo - to throw; parabolay - parable, or throw beside.
Luke 10:25 - And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted Him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
[Question: Taking issue or checking doctrine? "...tempted Him..."; this lawyer sought to make Jesus look the fool.]
Luke 10:26 - He said unto him, What is written in the law? How readest thou?
[Translation: "Well, you're a lawyer...what does it say?"]
[Observation: Jesus, true to form, meets us right where we are.]
Luke 10:27 - And he anwering said, THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL THY MIND; AND THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF.
[Reference Deuteronomy 6:5 (Love God); Leviticus 19:18 (Love your neighbor)]
Luke 10:28 - And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: *This do, and thou shalt live.
[This lawyer is accustomed to telling others what to do, not vice versa; now he looks the fool. Jesus answers him in kind by quotation of the very law that the lawyer supposedly knows.]
[Reference Leviticus 18:5 (possibly Deuteronomy 6:2{?})]
Luke 10:29 - But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
[Translation in today's language: "Alright, Jesus, Mr. Smartypants, who do YOU say my neighbor is?"]
Luke 10:30 - And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed leaving him half dead.
[A certain man: picture of every one of us heading down to Jericho from Jerusalem, facing away from God's holiness; reference Romans 3:23]
[Jerusalem: literally "City of Peace"; Jericho: literally "fragrant" - could be translated "City of Enjoyment", "City of Anticipation"; Reference Joshua 6:26; 1 Kings 16:34]
[thieves: picture of sin; these thieves have names like Blasphemy, Idolatry, Irreverence, Sacrilege, Parental Disobedience, Murder, Adultery, Theft, Perjury and Covetousness]
[stripped him: picture of how sin steals dignity]
[wounded him: literally, "laid blows upon" him]
[half dead: picture of our state in sin - physically alive, spiritually dead (see also Romans 6:23)]
Luke 10:31 - And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
[priest: picture of legalistic religious leader]
Luke 10:32 - And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
[Levite: picture of legalistic religious layperson]
Luke 10:33 - But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
[Samaritan: picture of Our Lord Jesus Christ]
[Reference John 15:13; later reference 15:14.]
Luke 10:34 - And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
[Reiterate that Jesus meets us where we are; He heals us from the damage that our sin causes; Reference Titus 3:3-7]
[pouring in oil and wine: picture of when we are saved we are sealed by the Holy Spirit (oil) and covered by the blood of Jesus (wine); reference Ephesians 1:13]
[set him on his own beast: reference Matthew 11:28-30; picture of Jesus bringing rest]
[an inn: NOT "Hev Inn", not yet; this is a picture of the church; we are to take care of our newly reborn brothers and sisters in Christ; we are to nourish and cherish them]
Luke 10:35 - And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
[two pence: picture of His body, His blood]
[gave them to the host: picture of price of sin (death) paid to the Father; reference John 19:30 - tetelestai, it is finished]
{Transition - Luke 23:46 - ...Father, into Thy hands I commend My Spirit...}
[said unto the host, Take care of him: picture of Jesus leaving us with the Comforter]
[...when I come again...: Reference John 14:2b-3; Reference Revelation 19:11-16, and Reference Matthew 25:31-46]
Luke 10:36 - Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
Luke 10:37 - And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
[The lawyer again answers his own question with Jesus' help; Jesus takes the entire exchange to the next level by telling the lawyer--again, telling--the lawyer that in order to inherit eternal life the lawyer must not only love God with his all and his neighbor as himself, but that he must be neighborly; that is, he must lay down his life for the sake of others, to the glory of God.]
[Go...; reference Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15]
